Doctor Allen Frances has caused uproar with his attack on the new American manual for mental diseases. This is highly relevant for transgender persons.
Those who have followed me for a while know that I am very concerned about the fact that both crossdressing and crossdreaming (“autogynephilia” and “autoandrophilia”) are classified as mental diseases and are included in the American psychiatric manual (the DSM) as well as the WHO ICD counterpart.
I have argued that these phenomena might as well be the psychological expression of natural human diversity as regards gender and sexuality, and that it is the fact that it is society – including psychiatrists who insist on calling this a perversion or a “paraphilia” – that causes the real mental anguish of these people.
The separatists transwomen intensify their attacks on crossdressers and "transgender", immensely fearful of contamination by association.
Separatist ideologue and HBS International general, Rose White, has now declared war on the presence of drag queens in Pride Parades in Calder-dale, Britain. The argument:
“Drag queens – homosexuals dressed as women – and drag kings, women dressed as men, performing as stereotypical crossdressers promote, foster and reinforce the belief among the audience that any bloke in a frock must be a homosexual.” she says. “If these people are allowed to perform in the town in the Pride, they must have a prominent sign stating ‘We are homosexual men – not transexuals’."
Are men that feel attraction to transwomen and crossdressers really crossdreamers (autogynephiliacs)? If so: Can this fascination give us insight into their transgender nature?
"Autogynephilia" is for a good reason one of the most controversial diagnoses in the transgender area. Ray Blanchard argues that gynephilic M2F crossdressers and transwomen are basically heterosexual men who are turned on by the idea of having a woman's body.
I have argued that it is possible to recognize the fact that some men get aroused by feminization fantasies without labeling them as narcissistic perverts or paraphiliacs, i.e. without accepting Blanchard's explanation for why these male bodied persons feel the way they do. I call them M2F crossdreamers.
I also believe we have to look into controversial phenomena like this one if we are to get to the bottom of what the various transgender conditions really are.
Another equally controversial topic is the "transfan" or "transsensual", i.e. men who are attracted to M2F transsexuals, crossdressers or "shemales". In this article I am going to see if that phenomenon can help us get a better understanding of crossdreamers in general.
The myth of the non-existent female to male crossdreamer or crossdresser is crumbling. It turns out that women can be gender confused as well, without being homosexual or even transsexual.
Gender stereotypes have it that only men can be perverts. For some peculiar reason men are the ones who most wholeheartedly promote this standpoint. Many male to female crossdressers, for instance, seem resigned to "the fact" that they are nothing but "fetishist" and that the women they worship never are. They believe it is their male testosterone driven urges that drives them to them dressing up as women. They have no "inner woman".
Many sexologists and most evolutionary psychologists seem to agree. Ray Blanchard, who has looked at men who get turned on by imagining themselves as women, consider these woman-loving "autogynephiliacs" a completely different category from the "homosexual transsexuals" (i.e. M2F man-loving transwomen).
The "autogynephiliacs" (who I call crossdreamers) are suffering from a male typcal paraphilia, according to Blanchard, and a can in no way be considered feminine. As for female to male transsexuals, they are all "homosexuals". There are no female to male "paraphiliacs".
I must say that I have found this very strange. Why should the variety of nature bring us male to female "autogynephiliacs" and crossdressers, but no female to male "autoandrophiliacs"?
