On being an unperson

Being an unperson means being at the mercy of opinions that other people have about you.

This video was created as a presentation on the experience of being treated as a 'person with disabilities' rather than as a person.  We all want to be known as the person we are and for many of us, the dismissal of our identity comes in small doses.  For others, it is a complete disregard.  Sometimes the denial of our identity is violent, sometimes silent.  However, for any of us, when we are denied recognition and acknowledgment of our identity - it is the most insulting and most painful assault there is.

Disabled should claim rights in UN convention

NAIROBI, 12 November 2009 (PlusNews) - The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) should be used as a tool to improve access to HIV services for disabled people, who are often marginalized in national HIV policies, says a new report.

"PWDs experience all the risk factors associated with HIV, and are often at increased risk because of poverty, severely limited access to education and health care, lack of information and resources to facilitate 'safer sex', lack of legal protection, increased risk of violence and rape, vulnerability to substance abuse, and stigma," the authors noted in HIV/AIDS and Disability: Final Report of the 4th International Policy Dialogue.

HIV/AIDS was implicitly included in the CRPD under article 25a, where "State Parties shall provide PWDs with the same range, quality and standard of free, affordable health care and programmes as provided to other persons, including in the area of sexual and reproductive health and population-based public health programmes," the authors noted.

New Site Details Abuse of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

Yana Buhrer Tavanier is a freelance journalist from Sofia, Bulgaria.  She has been working on a project to detail the abuse of adults institutionalized in Bulgaria, Romania & Serbia.

She has set up a blog to help release the information in text and images called Dumping Grounds for People.  It is by far, the most powerful site I have seen this year.  Human beings stripped of identity, dignity, care and respect.  These are mothers, brothers, daughters and friends - abandoned to squalor, poison and disease until their bodies finally decay and fail.

Here is a preview from this video portion of this project. [trigger warning]

Trans Rights Declaration endorsed by ILGA-Europe in Malta

This Declaration was adopted by great majority of the participants of the Trans Rights Conference in Malta on October 28th 2009.  It was endorsed on by ILGA-Europe and will be used as policy documents guiding the future work of both organisations.
We, the participants of the European Trans Rights Conference, yearn for a Europe free from all discrimination(1), where all people are valued equally irrespective of their gender identity and gender expression.  We envision a Europe where people of all gender identities and gender expressions are fully respected and can live freely without any violations to their human rights and institutions’ interferences in their private lives, in accordance with the Yogyakarta Principles(2).  We want a Europe where health insurance funded adequate hormonal and surgical medical assistance is available in a non-pathologizing manner to all those trans people(3) who seek it, and where no trans person is required to undergo any compulsory medical treatment (such as sterilization or gender reassignment surgeries) or a mental disorder diagnosis in order to change legal gender and/or name.

Commissioner for Human Rights' ‘Gender Identity and Human Rights’ Issue Paper

We unanimously welcome the ‘Gender Identity and Human Rights’ Issue Paper(4) published by the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, in July 2009.  Commissioner Hammarberg’s Issue Paper is a significant step forward in articulating the human rights and equality that national governments should provide to trans people. We endorse all of Commissioner Hammarberg’s twelve recommendations and urge all 47 Council of Europe Member States to implement these recommendations at their national levels, including the implementation of legislation/procedures that allows to change name and gender without compulsory medical treatments, or any form of diagnosis, and including strong anti-discrimination legislation inclusive of gender identity and gender expression.

When Simply Stating Your Truth Isn't Enough

For better or for worse, we have developed a culture in which personal truths are valued as highly as objective facts -- sometimes even mistaken for objective facts.
