Sex+++ Documentary Film Series is looking for grant application advice

I was speaking with Lisa Junkin at the Sex+++ Documentary Film Series last week.  She said that the success of the series has endeared it to the community, shown value for the Museum and University.  It has also grown beyond the budget they have set aside for it.  Lisa is now looking to convert it into something viable and something that can reach even more people.  Her background is not in grant application or funding in general and I suggested that she write up a description of what she is looking for so that we can post it for you all to see.  So, here is a brief note from Lisa about what the film series needs and the kind of help they could use.  -a

Hi, my name is Lisa and I co-organize the Sex Positive Documentary Film Series, an educational film and discussion series about diverse aspects of sexuality, particularly at the margins. I have a question about funding sources for this program and am hoping that the community here could weigh in.

This series is run by my employer, the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, which is a part of the University of Illinois Chicago. We have hosted this series for more than 2 years and it has been highly successful, but we have never acquired a grant for it. So far, the program has been entirely funded by the museum's resources and by generous donations by individuals and private businesses. But we're lining up our next two years of AMAZING films, and the costs are adding up.

We would like to find a grant or other funding source to help pay for our expenses, but so far it has been difficult to find a good match.  Our content is, as you can imagine, a bit unconventional for some feminist or woman-oriented funding sources, and we can't accept major funding from places like Playboy because of concerns at the university level (though note that we count among our private donors a dungeon and a sex toy shop.) Other foundations relating to sexuality tend to be either policy-driven or are oriented to address issues of rape and violence, which doesn't match our focus closely enough.

Thoughts? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Our program goals are as follows:

+Screen and discuss documentary films with a positive, informative spin on human sexuality
+Establish a conversation about positive sexuality among communities that aren't currently cross-pollinating
+Support filmmakers creating new work on sexual identities and topics
+Create a replicable model for excellent sex positive programming and community building

1700% Project: Mistaken for Muslim

This film is the 2010 recipient of the Grand Prize award for LinkTV's One Chicago, One Nation film competition. Using the music video format as a subversive tool of engagement and collaboration, artist Anida Yoeu Ali and filmmaker Masahiro Sugano, worked with over 100 diverse volunteers, participants and community members in the Chicagoland area.

In their film, narratives collide with music, poetry and politics to create a complex and layered experience. A poet, dancer, angel, prisoner converge with community to speak, deflect, and intervene against racial profiling and hate crimes. Featured portraits represent real American Muslims in Chicago, people who refuse to end in violence. Central to the video is an unapologetic poem, a response to injustices directed against the Muslim community that reflect both the absurdity and dangers of racially-motivated fears.

"1700%" refers to the rate of increase in hate crimes committed against people perceived as Muslim or Arab after 9/11. The video is one facet of a larger ongoing project titled "1700% Project" utilizing art as a form of strategic intervention to present works that challenge monolithic stereotypes of Muslims.

Cafe Society, a year-long series featuring several Columbia College exhibitions, welcomes the Columbia community and the public for a salon style discussion of Tomboy. November 16, 4:00-6:00pm in the Glass Curtain Gallery.

Tomboy examines the degrees to which identity and gender influence meaning in the work of six contemporary queer women artists.  From painterly gestures to performative acts, sculptural installations to digitally altered photographs, this exhibition explores the variety of approaches artists take in negotiating notions of identity.  These works turn away from the essentialism of early feminist art and the specificity of “identity art,” and instead employ identity in intentionally ambiguous, mercurial, and peripheral ways.  Tomboy delves into the murky spaces between the personal, the political, and the formal in order to ask viewers the question: “can and should what we know about an artist be separated from how we experience their work?”

What can you get with $2 million and 100 naked women?

Why, a 3-D porn film in Hong Kong, of course.  Sex and Zen is apparently so popular that travel agencies in China are falling all over themselves to reroute vacation plans to HK so the whole family can enjoy this extravaganza. 

Usually, a movie trailer is packed with all the best scenes.  Either they strayed from the formula here or this film has the potential to eclipse all records for worst vacation ever.  Just sayin'.

New Film from LGBTCentreMongolia: Tsenher tengeriin tsaana

Created as part of an exhibition at the Mongolian National Modern Art Museum, Behind The Blue Sky depicts an unmentionable love between two Mongolian boys - one from the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, and the other, a nomadic herder from the countryside.

To protect the identities of the Mongolian actors, their faces are obscured by a khadag, a traditional blue scarf.

The image that struck me sharpest was the footprint on the sand, washed away.  Isn't that what we all are?  In our vanity and bluster we try to ignore that or pretend that it is not so, but is it not the very essence of life?  Is the temporary impact of what we are and who we are - not in fact, the very engine that makes this life of each of us the special thing that it is?

"I Fought for This, But Not Just to Be a Housewife"

HAVANA, Sep 3, 2010 (IPS) - Mavi Susel, the first transsexual in Cuba to undergo sex reassignment surgery, back in 1988, has found herself trapped in the traditionally assigned gender role of a housewife.

"She is a woman imprisoned in that gender role," Marilyn Solaya, the Cuban filmmaker who made the documentary "En el cuerpo equivocado" (In the Wrong Body), told the press.

The film, which premiered in mid-August in Cuba, was produced with the support of the second edition of DOCTV Latinoamérica, the first regional programme to foment production and television broadcasting of Latin American documentaries.

The pioneering co-production programme is an alliance between national broadcasting authorities, public TV stations and independent producers from 14 Latin American countries, which provided funds, took part in production and ensured the broadcasting of the documentaries on 18 public TV stations.

The story of Susel, who underwent gender reassignment surgery on May 22, 1988, goes beyond the "complex and, above all, necessary" issue of transsexualism, to explore "the construction of gender" and the prevalence of the traditional role of women in Cuba, Solaya said.

Pride Film Festival: Seeking Queer Film [Call for Submissions]

SEEKING QUEER FILM!

PRIDE, a Bloomington, Indiana film festival exploring a wide variety of issues and situations involving the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, is seeking full-length and short films and videos for its 2011 festival held at the end of January. The films can be on any topic relating to a diverse range of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and/or transgender issues.  The deadline for submissions is September 31st, 2010. The Midwest festival spans three days, with multiple showings at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington.

Select filmmakers will be invited to attend the festival and speak about their work, and three awards will be given to the Audience Favorite, Jury Selection, and the Alfred C. Kinsey Prize winners.  The Alfred C. Kinsey Prize is given annually to a film that furthers our understanding of gender and sexuality, and the filmmaker is invited to submit a copy of the film to the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, which is located at Indiana University in Bloomington.

PRIDE seeks films that express a range of viewpoints and feature many different personality types and situations, advocating community-wide attitudes of awareness, acceptance and appreciation of diversity. The goals of the festival are to strengthen the local community and celebrate artistic talent and achievement.

The film must be recent: no entries of films produced prior to 2009, please.

Kusum - The Flower Bud

Synopsis: Can hope be found in the most unusual places amongst the most unlikely characters?  A young transvestite prostitute, Kusum, locked up in her room, gears up for a regular night like any other. But just then enters Purab, an out-of-a-job English literature teacher suffering from Tourette's syndrome and obsessive-compulsive behaviour, without a clue of the local language.  He spent his meager savings to spend one night with a girl, and finds himself stuck with a boy!  On the other hand, Kusum is at a loss with this man who seems to her a "freak" madly going about cleaning her room while throwing things at her in the middle of the night and insisting on blabbering in English!  Both can’t understand what the other is saying.  But as the night proceeds, insecurities, appearances and prejudices slowly give way, but just a little. Will these two people, alike as desperate misfits but otherwise so different, manage to find a connection?  Perhaps like a flower bud bursting through a crack in the wall, an unexpected beginning will see them through....
