Coming soon - Porn: The Musical

A new musical is being put together in Los Angeles that focuses on the Adult Film industry that flourishes in the San Fernando Valley.  A theater group from NYC, The Civilians and L.A.’s Center Theatre Group (recently transferred 9 to 5 to Broadway) have joined forces to create and produce the show in Los Angeles.

According to the CTG, the show “will explore the real-life stories of the people who work in California’s pornography industry.”

The initial phase of the project has “the creative team [going] behind the scenes and learn[ing] about the human side of this business, looking at the work and lives of directors, performers, producers, crew — everyone with a story to tell.”

Members of both theater groups have begun canvassing the valley for interesting stories. The Civilians use what they call an investigative approach to theater — that is taking real-life stories and interpreting them for the stage. (Steve Javors, XBIZ)

Creative Team:

Director: Steve Cosson
Composer and Lyricist: Michael Friedman
Project Coordinator: Jesus Reyes
Interviewers: Laura Nix, Matt Maher, Taylor Wilcox

You can track their progress via Steve's twitter account or the musical's.  The Civilians have also started a blog to help build awareness and document the process.  They have some interesting notes so far, detailing their intentions and early steps into the research process.  The have already met Buttman and attended a fundraiser for the Free Speech Coalition (whom you may know from our blogroll).

Their stated aim is to show the human side of lives in the porn biz.  This is something that I have seen first-hand for years.  People paying bills, buying houses, raising children and looking for a nice place for dinner.  This is something that I see not nearly as often as I would like and wonder if they will have the salt to stick with it.  Or...will they chicken out and play on sensationalist stereotypes and masturbation fantasies?  I certainly hope they will choose the former.

It will be a tough balancing act to draw people in with the word porn and get their minds out of their genitals in order to see human beings on stage and in a story.  Maybe they can do the job with good dialogue, great music, solid casting and a song title or two that will lay it all on the line.  The idea is a good one and the real daily lives of Adult film performers is rich enough for thousands of stage productions.  Here's to hoping that this group can succeed where almost nobody has even bothered.

You can contact them directly if you work in the Adult Film biz, at projects@thecivilians.org.
