International Meeting Against Homophobia in Turkey, May 1-17, 2010
Every year since 2006, they get together against homophobia within the week of May 17.
Kaos GL, working against Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity based discrimination, organizes a meeting against homophobia for the week of May 17. The 5th meeting against homophobia will be held on May 17th, 2010.
For 15 years, KAOS GL has been organizing social, cultural and academic activities for the improvement of the human rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite and Transsexual (LGBT) individuals.
They hosted the 1st meeting in 2006 as a four-day event; in 2009, the meeting went beyond Ankara and spread to 5 more cities as a result of the network established against homophobia.
Why May 17th?
May 17th is the International Day Against Homophobia to stand and act against all physical, moral and symbolic violence based on gender identity and sexual orientation.
LGBT individuals, face homophobic attitudes and behaviors in every aspect of our lives and are exposed to discrimination because of our sexual orientation and gender identity.
We recognize the fact that the problem of homophobia is not limited to LGBT people; we aim to highlight that it is also an issue for heterosexual women and men.
Our aim is to create a platform where discrimination against LGBT individuals is discussed and LGBT visibility is ensured.
With the help of this meeting, we want to discuss and share our thoughts about a world where both LGBT and heterosexual individuals are liberated.
We are looking for solutions for our problems; we want to share the solutions we find and create material and spiritual possibilities for interference, if needed.
We believe that the International Meeting Against Homophobia is a prime part of our work in the direction of improving LGBT individuals’ freedom of speech and organization.
Who Is Participating?

We are waiting for your LGBT-themed short and long movies, plays, performances and music compositions.
Campus Meetings Against Homophobia
Meeting against homophobia was first held as a four-day hall event in 2006. In 2007, “Campus Meetings Against Homophobia” that took place in 3 main universities in the capital city were tied to the main events.
Campus meetings are being carried on to more campuses each year together with academicians and students’ help.
We Are Marching Against Homophobia and Transphobia!
The meeting starts with a march on May 1st and ends with May 17 March.
The march organized due to the International Day Against Homophobia is done together with LGBT individuals and organizations coming from all over Turkey.
On May 16th, “The March Against Homophobia” will take place under the rainbow flag against homophobia, transphobia and hatred, as part of the 5th meeting.
Why from the 1st May to the 17th May?
We are building bridges between the freedom struggles from May 1st to May 17th as the public demand for freedom must be common and the struggle must be shared!
May 1st is an important turn point for Kaos GL. On May 1st, 2001, Kaos GL has reach out to a public sphere for the first time and pointed out to the common grounds of the labor movement and LGBT activism under rainbow flags and with slogans. Our meeting is developing as a part of the freedom movement. With this bridge established, we aim to integrate the struggles against attacks and discriminations and increase the number of activism grounds.
Although the institutionalized LGBT struggle has added many angles to the movement and that there is a vast amount of victories won in tensely in West, transphobia and homophobia still presents a major challenge. The decision of The International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) to act and coming out on the streets once more fits into the frame of May 1st – 17th International Meeting Against Homophobia.
When Will The Program Be Completely Ready?
We plan to announce the program of 5th meeting by April 1st, 2010.
