Publicly funded, feminist porn!

Documentary filmmaker Mia Engberg has made a feminist porn film, titled Dirty Diaries: Twelve Shorts of Feminist Porn.  All of the filmmakers are either female or identify as female (one of the filmmakers was born male).  Each film was shot on a mobile phone.  The project received 350,000 kronor in production support from the Swedish Film Institute

The collection of independent stories coalesce around a central manifesto:

- Beautiful the way we are: To hell with the sick beauty ideals!  Deep self-hatred keeps a lot of women's energy and creativity sapped.  The entergy that could be focused into exploring our own sexuality and power is being drained off into diets and cosmetics.  Don't let the commercial powers control your neeeds and desires.

- Fight for your right to be horny:  male sexuality is seenas a force of nature that has to be satisfied at all costs while women's sexuality is accepted only if it adapts to men's needs.  Be horny on your own terms.

- A good girl is a bad girl:  We are fed up with the cultureal cliché that sexually active and independent women are either crazy or lesbian and therefore crazy.  We want to see and make movies where Betty Blue, Ophelia and Thelma & Louise don't have to die in the end.

- As nasty as we wanna be:  Enjoy, take charge or let go.  Say NO when you want, to be able to say YES when YOU want.

- Legal and free abortion is a human right!  Everyone has the right to control their own body.  Millions of women suffer from unwanted pregnancies and die from illegal abortions every year.  Fuck the 'moral right' for preaching against birth control and sex information.

- Fight the real enemy!  Censorship cannot liberate sexuality.  It is impossible to change the image of women's sexuality if sexual images in themselves are taboo.  Don't attack women for displaying sex.  Attack sexim for trying to control our sexuality.

- Stay Queer:  A lot of opposition to erotica is homophobic and eve more transphobic.  We don't believe in the fight between the sexes but in the fight against sexes.  Identify as any gender you want and make love to whoever you want.  Sexuality is diverse.

- Use Protection:  "I'm not saying go out an' do it, but if you di, strap it up before you smack it up." (Missy Elliot)

- Do it yourself:  Erotica is good and we nee it.  We truly believe that it is possible to create an alternative to the mainstream porn industry by making sexy films we like.

Hell yeah!  I couldn't agree with that list more, if you freakin' paid me!  I am so enthused by this project and I absolutely will be ordering a copy.  (I'll review it of course.)

This story is such good news on several fronts.

Firstly, it is another example of honest and accepting views of sex, gender & body being celebrated.  The key to replacing the stereotypes, vilification, inequity and pathological social structures we embrace as 'tradition' and use to define sex - is to replace them with honesty, facts and acceptance.  I can think of no better example of exactly how to do so, than this film.

Next, to the filmmaker's point - feminism is about women choosing the terms of their own sex, body & gender identities and expressions.  Period.  It means, that women can choose and say for themselves who they are, who they fuck and if or when they will choose to do so.  Unfettered by advertising and consumerism or patriarchal bullying.

Finally, the use of public funds has just got to be a knife through the heart of the social conservatives.  People that largely like to trumpet their devotion to religious & moral living, while they hoard wealth, fund war profiteers and devalue people because of ethnicity or gender.  That these hypocrites are upset is like a triple-word score in Scrabble.

Dirty Diaries premieres at the Bio Rio theatre in the inner-Stockholm district of Hornstull this Thursday evening. There will be two further public screenings of the film at the same venue, on Saturday and Sunday.  You can purchase it now as a DVD on the website.

Backlash

As much as I completely love this project and everything it stands for, I still see an intense backlash from the other side of the feminist movement. The idea that all porn is exploitation and objectifying is still being made in some circles. I won't be suprised if those women have a fit over this

certainly, a lot of people will not like this film.

I am just so excited about the all the new open minds and convesations that this film will create.  What a great thing it is.

Did you visit the website and view the trailer?

Amazing!

I did go and view the trailer. This is exactly the kind of porn that needs to be made. It's not gay, it's not straight, it's not a bunch of airbrushed cookie cutter looking women, it's everything that real queer sex is. I love it, and I hope that they keep at it. I really do hope it creates a lot of conversation, since breaking down all these boundries is what I think is the next step in understanding and exploring sexuality in general. I try to do it in my blog, I write about queer, straight, kinky and vanilla, I want all the information out there for everyone. That's exactly the hopes I have for this movie.

Also, it's pretty damn hot and I'm totally ordering a copy!
