Shut Up & Love the Rain

I fell asleep last night trying to reconcile the two distinct ideas (or truths) that gender is a social construct and that people are born into the wrong gender. I couldn’t really make sense of it myself, but one thing is for sure, the normative idea of gender needs some amendments (and by some, I mean a hell of a whole lot), because there are a lot of people that do not fit into the male and female binary, which seems that have been invented by 1950′s ad execs.

Do you know what’s good for confusion?

A little education, or as Robnoxious‘ dad, Rachel, in Shut Up & Love The Rain puts it: “…spread the word. That’s what it takes, the more people know, the less hostility you’re gonna have. That’s true of the whole world, and all the anger that’s in the world, cause once you know people (you realize we are all human and there’s nothing to be afraid of).

You know what, it’s alright to be confused or to not understand something. The problem lies in being afraid of what confuses you and turning that fear into hatred and hostility. That’s no good. It might make for some “interesting” childhood memories, but it’s no way to live your life. Thank fucking god (metaphorically) there are people out there who dedicate their time and energy to spreading the kind of information that will ultimately make the world a better place to live.

I just finished reading Robnoxious‘ zine Shut Up & Love the Rain and he managed to make my world a better place to live in the span it took me to read the stories he had to tell. I especially liked the comic stripes that told stories from his childhood, or rather his own private sexual-biography and education (actually let me re-phrase that, Rudimentary Rubbings, Early Attempts, and Romantic Sprout are all pretty freakin’ brilliant examples of storytelling/comics).

“What can you do in a world full of judgey-pants hating people”, write a zine, I say, or maybe read one. Either way, it’s a good place to start.

P.S. My Queer is also a great article in terms of defining for yourself an identity in which you respect (and set) your own boundaries, but that is also fluid in nature. It will definitely make you think about your own “my queer”. And we need to know that shit about ourselves so that we don’t enter relationships or situations where those boundaries aren’t respected.
