"We Want You To Think Outside The Box, but not THAT much".

Last night at dinner, I was chatting with a couple of guys from North Carolina. One of them mentioned his friend who applied to the North Carolina School of the Arts, and sent in a screenplay. For a porno. Set during the Crucifixion. In which Jesus got a blowjob from the cross.

NCSA apparently wasn't thrilled, and sent said friend a very threatening letter.

Now, if I were the admissions person, I'd probably accept the guy. It takes a hell of a lot of guts to be willing to write something that would be so out there and guaranteed to piss off pretty much everybody.

If arts colleges are going to say "We want you to take risks" "Think outside the box" and "Question Norms", then they have no right to get upset when students actually follow their advice.

This morning, my art history professor got really irritated when I said the word "shit". Because god forbid some other student get offended.

PEOPLE, WE'RE AT AN ART COLLEGE. PEOPLE SWEAR, FUCK EACH OTHER SENSELESS, DRINK, AND SMOKE A VARIETY OF SUBSTANCES. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, GO TO CALVIN COLLEGE INSTEAD*.

(Along a similar train of thought, it would be nice if the Savannah/Chatham Police Department spent their time and resources working to fight crime and keep neighborhoods safe at night instead of busting parties. I fear the strangers I see along MLK and 36th Street more than a bunch of art students waving glowsticks.)

Perhaps this makes me the World's Worst Christian, but between placating other Christians, and protecting freedoms endowed under the First Amendment, I will always choose the First Amendment.

*Calvin College is a conservative college located in Grand Rapids. It has repeatedly placed near the top of The Princeton Review's list of "Stone Cold Sober" schools.

If you want, you can always screen this in your Comparative Religions class.
